Wisconsin’s impressive religious sites aren’t limited to charming chapels and stunning cathedrals. For instance, did you know about the Queen of the Holy Rosary Mediatrix of Peace Shrine? A spectacular sacred site, it marks the spot where, in 1949, the Virgin Mary appeared to a Wisconsin woman.
The Queen of Holy Rosary Mediatrix of Peace Shrine is located in Necedah, a tiny village in Juneau County.
Pretty expansive (as far as shrines go), the site spans four acres and features 14 grottos.
The grottos depict the Stations of the Cross, which is a “14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man.”
In addition to the grottos, there’s signage, which explains that on November 12, 1949, the Blessed Mother appeared to Mary Ann Van Hoof on the grounds that now contain the shrine.
Mary Ann continued to receive messages for the following 34 years. According to Mary Ann, the Virgin Mary came to Necedah primarily for the youth. The messages also concerned the Catholic Church, America, and the world.
A replica of the Van Hoofs' home (the original burned down) also stands on the shrine’s grounds.
The grounds' most popular feature, though, is the encapsulated statue of the Virgin Mary.
In front of the statue, there are kneeling pads, allowing visitors to comfortably pray.
According to Mary Ann, the Blessed Mother told her, “The blessings will be given to many that come to these grounds.”
Taking the message to heart, countless people have visited the shrine over the years. There are nearly as many testimonies, which tell of “conversions, reversions, cures, miracles witnessed, and favors received."
Another common occurrence shared by many visitors involves rosaries. According to reports, the silver links of rosaries have changed to gold and, in some cases, the beads changed color, too. Interestingly enough, the Blessed Mother revealed at Necedah that "the rosary is the strongest weapon against the enemy of God."
Know before you go: Visitors are asked to observe “modesty in dress.” Wrap-around skirts are available for those who don’t meet the dress code requirements.
