It's becoming a known fact that Milwaukee is one of the most underrated cities in the U.S., and people are comparing us to Chicago less and less. Visitors from all over are beginning to see how unique Brew City really is, and why it's one of the best places to be. If you didn't already have your own list of reasons to love MKE, we'll give you ten more.
1. We’re a coastal city without a coast.
There’s nothing like lake living. Being able to hop on over to the beach at any time is something we often take for granted, and being in the Midwest we don’t even have the extreme weather that "real" coasts have.
2. Our brewing history has made us "Brew City."
Being the birthplace of big names in beer like Miller, Schlitz, and Blatz has truly made us the brewing capital of the country. This rich history has affected our present day, too, and the beer culture here is amazing. Whether you’re going on a brewery tour, or hanging out at your local corner bar, it’s a much more rich experience than you can find anywhere else.
3. We celebrate summer like it may never come again.
Milwaukee is known for its harsh winters, but that just means we appreciate warm weather so much more! This city comes to life in the summer, and there’s always a party going on.
4. Speaking of celebrating, we celebrate everything.
Not only do we celebrate the warm weather, we throw a party for everything. Milwaukee is the "City of Festivals," and we have a festival for every culture imaginable. We’re home to some of the world’s largest ethnic festivals, and they’re all kicked off with awesome firework shows. There’s no better way to experience diverse cultures than to pack it into a huge celebration.
5. Brats and frozen custard rule the city.
Our traditions can be a little weird, but we stick to them. There’s nowhere else in the world where you will find people so fanatical about foods like brats on the grill or frozen custard. We’ll argue these preferences to death, but you’ll fall in love with them too.
6. There’s almost too much food here.
Sharing meals is huge part of Milwaukee culture. The problem (or not) is, there are so many options for incredible meals. Whether you’re looking for a 5-star sit down meal, an eclectic cafe, or a taco truck that’s better than any you’ve ever had, the options are endless and new spots are popping up constantly.
7. Milwaukee breeds artists.
Art is a huge part of our city. From the museums and independent galleries to the streets themselves, our city is overflowing with creativity. With everything from fine art to musicians in your local bar, you can’t avoid it.
8. We’re not short of culture, by any means.
Milwaukee often gets a bad rep for being segregated, and we’re trying hard to fix that. That being said, we’re one of the most diverse cities in the country and we’re constantly celebrating every ethnicity. Wherever you go, you’re sure to learn about new cultures and it’s awesome how connected we all are.
9. Green, green, green.
With over 150 parks in Milwaukee alone, we’re not short of green space. City living can get dull beneath the concrete, but here in Milwaukee we have countless places to go hiking, biking, or anything in between!
10. The people.
Milwaukeeans are unlike any other people you've ever met. They'll give you the shirt off their back, cook you food, and always ask your day was. You'll love them instantly, and the best part is that they'll love you too.
