Is Harpers Ferry Worth Visiting?

Harpers Ferry is one of the most uniquely structured towns I have ever visited. One solid way to begin your discovery is by stopping at the Jefferson County West Virginia Welcome Center which is conveniently located right off U.S. Route 340. Inside you'll find directions, brochures, and live help from the friendly staff crafting your idea of a weekend in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

How To Get To Harpers Ferry

Depending on where you live, Harpers Ferry is a little more than an hour from Washington, D.C. and Maryland, and about a half hour from Leesburg, Virginia. I came through Charleston, West Virginia which was about a five-hour drive one way.

The lengthy route brought me to this gorgeous view around 9 a.m., right in front of Yokum's Store in Seneca Rocks, West Virginia, reminding me of how primitive and grand the land once stood in front of the early settlers embarking on new lives in this wild country wondering: What world is this?

Getting Around Harpers Ferry

Harpers Ferry has lots of hills, so be prepared to get your steps in! Visitors can also rent an e-bike, or travel on the Eastern Panhandle Transit Authority city buses.

But if you're going to Lower Town Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, you must pay the minimum $20 bus ride through Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Otherwise, parking isn't available in the downtown area with a few exceptions. Believe me - I thought I could find another way, but after wasting some considerable time I relented.

I was happy once I committed to the pretty ride along the path - and I would have missed out. An audio recording explains the view and the interesting history behind all of the astonishing rugged beauty we passed though. The friendly and informative bus driver even went over the map with me, answered every question, and offered suggestions.

Spots are also available at the Lower Town Train Station Parking Lot for $20 - but these fill up early.

As I walked up the hill I turned around and saw the train coming against this stunning scenery - so grateful for the show.

Best Time To Visit Harpers Ferry

When everything is green and growing, framed in colorful autumn hues, or snow-capped in white - every time is the best time to visit Harpers Ferry. These Appalachian Trail hikers were headed to lunch and maybe stopping by the Appalachian Trail Visitor Center. How I wished I was among them sharing in their rich tales. Their endurance is inspiring as some had walked more than 1,000 miles - and counting.

Bolivar Heights

You wouldn't know this lovely and well-preserved site is one of the most significant Civil War battlefields in West Virginia where the largest surrender of U.S. troops took place. Now it is a wild space with sweet hikes, artillery, and an extraordinary vista.

Storer College

More than 30,000 people newly freed from slavery were in the Shenandoah Valley after the Civil War. The Freedmen’s Bureau, the Freewill Baptists of New England, and John Storer saw the need for education. They worked together and the Storer College was born in 1867. The school survived for 88 years.

Virginia Lodge No. 1

This historic brick house was once part of the U.S. Armory complex where during the Civil War Union soldiers camped, drilled, and wrote their names inside on the plaster walls. Now it is home to the Odd Fellows organization.

John Brown's Fort

John Brown's Fort was erected in 1848 as the Armory’s fire engine and guard house where the tireless abolitionist and several of his followers barricaded themselves during the final hours of their doomed raid on Oct. 16, 17, and 18, 1859.

Wherever I wandered told a story about the past walking up one hill and down the next - it was exhilarating. I've never before experienced such different worlds in the same small space intertwining shopping and restaurants among the fascinating history. Bolivar Children's Park

Open from dawn to dusk, I was surprised to find this small playground in the middle of a neighborhood. It offers a pavilion and picnic tables. Parking is located at Town Hall or a side lot off Taylor Street.

Harpers Ferry National Historic Park

Harpers Ferry is located where West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia meet at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. Thomas Jefferson said the views here were “worth a voyage across the Atlantic.” When I walked through the little path to find this - I have to agree I was not prepared for such a view - especially right near town at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

Are you ready to take a Small Town Getaway to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia? If you go, dress for anything. Wear shorts under your skirt and pack water shoes. This historic place is so full of passionate and exciting landmarks and stories that one trip just isn't enough.
