Are you new to West Virginia or considering a move here? Wonder if you've got what it takes to live in the Mountain State?
What does it take to survive in West Virginia? There are a lot of ways you can answer that question. You'll need some things and you'll need some character traits. Here are some of both that I think it takes to live here.
1. A love of natural beauty
It's easy to love and there's a whole lot of it in West Virginia!
2. Something blue and gold to wear
For when you're cheering on the Mountaineers!
3... Or something green and white to wear
For when you're cheering on the Thundering Herd.
4. Some sort of vehicle
This is not one of those places where you can walk, bicycle or ride the bus to anywhere you'd need to go. You're gonna want a car.
5. A good mechanic
You're gonna need a good mechanic to align your car after you drive on our roads that are covered in pot holes.
6. Good eyesight
Among other things, good eyesight, or a good pair of glasses, helps you spot the deer before they run out into the roadway.
7. Allergy meds
You're gonna need them in the spring.
8. A sense of adventure
There's so many adventurous things to do in West Virginia! From rock climbing to white water rafting, there's always something exciting to get into.
9. Hiking boots
You're gonna want them as your hiking through West Virginia's beautiful forests.
10. An appreciation for small-town life
There are a lot of small towns here.
11. Strength
From chemical spills in our water to train derailments to gas pipeline explosions and coal mining disasters, life in West Virginia can be difficult. You'll no doubt need strength to live here.
12. A parking brake
There are a lot of hills to park on in West Virginia, like in Fairmont, pictured here. If they're steep enough, they can be scary to park on, so you'll need your parking brake.
13. A sense of humor
You're bound to hear some jokes about living in West Virginia. People may even call you a hillbilly or ask if you wear shoes. It can make you angry, but you're better off laughing. They clearly don't know much about the real West Virginia.
What do you think it takes to survive here?
