The Bahamas, located about 50 miles east of south Florida, is known for its crystal clear waters, an attribute not generally associated with West Virginia. But there is one exception: Summersville Lake in Nicholas County.
Summersville Lake is a man made reservoir formed in the 60s by the Summersville Dam on the Gauley River. The lake is the largest in West Virginia, and one of the most popular destinations in the state. It covers a total area of 2,700 acres, with more than 60 miles of shoreline.
Among the lake's most striking features are the high stony cliff faces from which some amazing views of the lake can be found.
SCUBA divers have christened the lake "the little Bahamas of the east" because of its incredibly clear water, also a defining characteristic of the Bahamas.
The lake has a maximum depth of 327 feet, with many rock formations going as deep as 100 feet. Underwater visibility is at least 20 feet in all direction or more, depending on weather conditions. You can bring your own equipment or rent some from the SCUBA shop.
There is also plenty to do above water, including skiing and water surfing. If you do not have your own boat to take on the lake, you can rent one when you arrive.
While there, be sure to take the tour of the Summersville Lighthouse - the only fully functional lighthouse in West Virginia. From there, you can get a great view of the lake from up on high. The resort also offers accommodations for camping either for tents (primitive and electric) and RVs. You can also rent a cabin if you prefer.
Summersville Lake Resort is located at 278 Summersville Lake Road, Highway 129 West in Mount Nebo.
