If you want to drive the byway from start to finish, you can find its most western points in Richwood and Summersville in Nicholas County. You’ll be guided through twisting mountain roads, shady forests, and natural wonders. This route is perfect for a weekend road trip.
The highway gets its name from the many gorgeous rivers, streams, and creeks that run parallel to the road throughout the length of the byway. You’ll be treated to glorious views of the Gauley, Mury, and Cow Pasture rivers, among many others.
If you follow the road all the way to its eastern boundary, you’ll hit the charming city of Lexington, Virginia. This historic community is packed with landmarks to admire and delicious restaurants to sample.
If you want to tackle the entire road, we recommend blocking out at least a three-day weekend for the journey. The road is about 170 miles from start to finish, but there are plenty of things to do and see along the way. You’ll want to leave plenty of time for exploration.
