When the fall foliage starts to peak in West Virginia, you'll want to snag every opportunity to take in the natural show of vibrant color. One of the most relaxing ways to go leaf-peeping is aboard a train. But not just any train... a full-day excursion on the rails designed to treat you to the fall colors that you just can't see any other way. The Autumn Colors Express will run round-trip from Huntington to Hinton for an entire day full of spectacular scenery.
This train ride follows the same route as the former New River Train that was a popular annual fall foliage excursion for the past 50 years. The New River Train was discontinued due to regulations and funding issues. Railexco, an excursion rail company has picked up the route running the Autumn Colors Express to continue the half-century tradition.
Get your fall foliage fix aboard the Autumn Colors Express as it winds through the New River Gorge from Huntington to Hinton and back. You'll be able to soak in a one-of-a-kind view of the hues of autumn.
This is no ordinary railway excursion. The train is comprised of privately-owned vintage rail cars from across the nation.
Each car is completely unique but provides a luxurious ride on the rails. For a full-day trip, you'll enjoy the added comfort of these special vintage cars.
Select which kind of railway car you want to ride in. From chairman's class to coach, there are six different levels to choose from when you purchase your tickets.
The Autumn Colors Express will depart the Huntington depot at 8 a.m. and make its way to Charleston. Travelers will also be able to board the train in our capitol city before it departs.
Besides just gazing at the stunning golds, oranges, and reds of the trees, you'll want to keep your eyes peeled for other sights along the way. The train will pass by Kanawha Falls, Hawk's Nest Dam, and the historic Thurmond Station before arriving in Hinton.
You'll arrive in Hinton at 11:30 a.m. just in time to check out Railroad Days, a unique fall festival. The train will depart at 3 p.m. to make its return journey to Huntington.
The Autumn Colors Express will run for three days only, Friday, October 25th, Saturday, October 26th, and Sunday, October 27th. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit their website.
