When it comes to Washington's top destinations, Leavenworth tends to get all the love during the holiday season. Chelan and the always-charming Port Townsend also get a lot of local recommendations, and Walla Walla is certainly having a moment. So it was a bit surprising to see Yakima on a list of the coolest towns in America to visit in 2021 -- but we're glad this beautiful valley is finally getting some of the recognition it deserves.
First, forget about that whole "Palm Springs of Washington" thing -- even the locals will tell you that isn't true.
Yakima has a character that is all its own, and that's exactly the way we like it.
If you're a craft beer drinker, you're already familiar withe the flavors of Yakima.
The area produces more than 75% of the hops in America, so the odds are good that you've had Yakima hops.
There are plenty of great places in the area to enjoy said craft beer, but nothing quite tops a day at Bale Breaker Brewing Company.
Bale Breaker is officially the third largest independent craft brewery in Washington, which is no easy task since it was founded in 2013.
Of course, we all know wine is the other star of the show in the Yakima Valley.
There are all kinds of beautiful places to taste in the area, such as Bonair Winery.
Treveri Cellars specializes in sparkling wine, and their patio is the best place to be on a warm, sunny day.
The Yakima Valley is home to more than 17,000 acres of vineyards and more than 120 wineries. We do not recommend seeking out all 120 on the same visit.
Considering the valley has the largest variety of produce in the Pacific Northwest, it's no wonder that the city's food scene has come a long way in recent years.
Restaurants such as Crafted and Cowiche Canyon use local purveyors whenever possible.
Crafted is a true culinary delight, the perfect place to meet for a date night or a special occasion.
Owners Dan and Mollie and their talented team really put that local produce and meat to good use.
After an understandable year-long hiatus, events and festivals are slowly returning to Yakima.
The city is well-known for events, such as the Fresh Hop Ale Festival and Downtown Summer Nights.

When you need to rest, book a room at Hotel Maison.
This historic hotel has some exquisite rooms and suites, and they're a fraction of the price they'd be in a big city.
Yakima may not seem like the best destination for a weekend getaway, but it certainly has a lot to offer.
It's also very laid back. No one would blame you if you existed entirely on wine, craft beer, and street tacos during your time here.
