When our fellow Washingtonians talk about Vancouver, we know better than to assume they're referring to Canada. Still, our southernmost city that borders Portland, Oregon often gets overlooked by travelers. And while being next to a city as hip as Portland is no easy task, Vancouver manages to hold its own with some pretty impressive attractions and eateries. Here are 10 good reasons to consider a visit as soon as possible.
1. It sits right on the Columbia River.
This is reason enough alone to visit. The Columbia is one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the Pacific Northwest, and you'll have a front row seat in Vancouver (especially at McMenamins On The Columbia, where this photo was taken).
2. The trails are incredible.
You don't even have to leave the city to go on an amazing nature hike or a jog. This is the Columbia River Waterfront Renaissance Trail, which spans 5 miles and is nice and scenic.
3. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is a piece of living history.
Fort Vancouver was once a 19th century fur trading post that was the PNW quarters of the of the Hudson's Bay Company's Columbia Department. It has been restored and preserved, and it's a pretty fascinating place to explore.
4. The shopping here is not too shabby (which happens to be the name of this boutique).
You don't have to deal with the traffic and chaos of Portland to find great shopping in this area. Vancouver has some excellent consignment shops, boutiques, vintage and thrift shops, and antiques.
5. Vancouver's Main Street was voted one of the Best in the West by Sunset Magazine.
You'll find coffee shops, restaurants, breweries, a historic theatre and plenty of art lining this street.
6. If you enjoy good beer (or you'd like to learn more about it), Vancouver is the place for you.
Vancouver is sometimes called "Brewcouver" because there are now 30 breweries and tasting rooms in the area. This is Hopworks Urban Brewery, one of the new additions.
7. Vancouver is a city fit for foodies.
Despite what you might think, you don't have to cross the border into Portland to find amazing food. Mama's Kitchen, Thai Wok Kitchen, Frontier Public House, Crave Grille and Beaches Restaurant & Bar (right on the Columbia) are just a few local favorites.
8. The local events are fabulous.
Three Days of Aloha. Vancouver Brewfest (August 11-12). Fresh Hop Fest. Farmers Market. These are just a few of the many events and activities taking place in Vancouver.
9. You can ride the Couve Cycle.
This 14-passenger, pedal-powered vehicle can be spotted all over town, offering a fun and exciting way to explore the downtown area.
10. Vancouver is close to some spectacular state parks and natural wonders.
You're never far from nature when you're in this city.
Vancouver is a beautiful, thriving city with many new and exciting things on the horizon. But if you'd rather enjoy a more historic experience, check out one of Washington's old villages.
