As the saying goes, life is more about the journey than the destination… but that doesn’t mean we’re always up for driving miles out of our way to explore a new place. Still, some spots are simply worth the trek, especially in the great state of Washington. These are 12 of them.

1. Mazama Country Inn

Located at 15 Country Road in the peaceful North Cascades, the Mazama Country Inn offers a quiet escape from the "real world." Stay in a private cabin or a cozy lodge room and enjoy amenities like the onsite restaurant and outdoor hot tub.

2. Tonasket

Many descendants of Washington's pioneer families still live in Tonasket, a quiet town located along the eastern bank of the Okanogan River in north central Okanogan County. Explore the 40 acres of parkland, go for a hike and enjoy a meal at the locally loved Rancho Chico.

3. Maryhill Museum of Art, Goldendale

Goldendale is a lengthy drive from practically anywhere in Washington, but this gorgeous world-class museum that dates back to 1940 is a must-see. It closes every year from mid-November to early March, so head that way quickly if you want to see it soon.

4. Brooklyn Tavern, 2611 N River Rd., Cosmopolis

The historic Brooklyn Tavern is Washington's most remote bar and grill. Be prepared to feel like a regular when you visit. The locals are friendly and it's a laid back place.

5. The Inn at Lucky Mud, Skamokawa

You'll find this peaceful inn at 44 Old Chestnut Drive in the remote Willapa Hills of Southwest Washington. The four large guest rooms here are equipped with all the comforts of home, and you'll be treated to a hearty homemade breakfast every morning. The inn is in the middle of nowhere, and that's the point.

6. Steptoe Butte

The panoramic views of the Palouse from Steptoe Butte State Park Heritage Site are unforgettable and will remind you of just how beautiful Eastern Washington really is.

7. Pioneer Park, Ferndale

Ferndale's Pioneer Park has historic cabins from the turn of the century. It was designed in 1901 for the purpose of holding its annual pioneer picnic, a continuing tradition that is today considered one of the oldest celebrations of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. The Congregational Church, which was built in 1876, can be rented for private events.

8. Snow Goose Produce, Mount Vernon

From March to October, Snow Goose Produce sells local seasonal fruits and veggies, freshly made bread, local cheese, ice cream and Washington wine. It's the one stop shopping center of your dreams.

9. Knemeyers Grill, Waterville

If you're ever driving down Locust Street in the (very) remote town of Waterville, stop at Knemeyers Grill. The building was constructed in 1914 and was once called Knemeyers Tavern, Knemeyers Saloon and Knemeyers Eatery & Spirits.

10. Bogachiel State Park, Forks

The entrance to this secluded state park is right on Highway 101, but then you'll head up to a remote camping park on the banks of the Bogachiel River.

11. Country Mercantile, Pasco

For 20 years, this family owned store has been delivering local produce, jam and other goods to people in the Tri Cities. They now have a second location in Richland, but their original location is more secluded. Get there by the end of October to enjoy the Harvest Festival.

12. Fleur de Provence Lavender Farm, Green Bluff, Mead

While the lavender farms in Sequim are stunning, Fleur de Provence is an Eastside gem. Nestled at the base of Green Bluff just north of Spokane, the farm overlooks the rolling wheat hills of the prairie. They're open on Friday and Saturdays from 10-2, Sundays from 12-4, and by appointment.
