While many of your favorite cities, parks, trails and other attractions are probably just a short drive away, many of Washington's finest gems happen to be a little more of a challenge to reach. These 10 spots might require a bit of travel time to see, but they're absolutely worth exploring.
1. The Hoh Rainforest
The Olympic Peninsula is pretty isolated from the rest of the state, and the Hoh takes awhile to reach no matter what part of Washington you call home. But if you've ever walked through the Hall of Mosses, you know it's well worth it.
2. Stehekin
Located in Chelan County, Stehekin is so remote that it requires a lengthy hike or a ferry just to reach. You won't get cell service. And for some people, that makes it the perfect vacation spot.
3. Lopez Island
Lopez Island is one of the more remote San Juan islands. It's rural, peaceful, and absolutely beautiful.
4. Kachess Lake
Kachess Lake is located near Cle Elum, but you'll have to head a little further west on I-90 and follow Kachess Lake Road for quite a while to find it. Once you're there, hike the short, mile-long trail to get the best views.
5. Lake Sylvia State Park
This hidden gem is nestled in the hills between Olympia and the coast. Featuring plenty of hiking trails and places to camp, it's a beautiful (and often quiet) place to spend a weekend.
6. The Diablo Lake Overlook
It isn't always easy to get to this breathtaking overlook. North Cascades National Park is off the beaten path for most Washingtonians. But this majestic lake is truly a sight every one of us should see at least once.
7. Palouse Falls
Palouse Falls in Washington's official waterfall, yet many of us have never seen it. The tiny town of Washtucna is the gateway to this gem, but you'll have to traverse some windy highways to get to the park.
8. Vashon Island
Vashon Island doesn't see as much tourism as Bainbridge, Whidbey, or any of the San Juans. But if you take the 20-minute ferry ride from West Seattle and spend a day exploring it, it will steal your heart.
9. Cape Flattery
Cape Flattery is the northwesternmost point of the contiguous United States, so calling it off the beaten path might be an understatement. But not only is it absolutely gorgeous, it's worth visiting just to say you were able to be at such a place.
10. Soap Lake
Soap Lake is located near Ephrata — and if you go, don't be surprised if you see people covered in mud. The minerals in the water are very alkaline, and many people use mud from the lake to heal skin ailments.
