There’s nothing like going for a relaxing drive through beautiful scenery, especially in the summer. Gas prices and busy schedules often get in the way, and that’s unfortunate because Washington has some incredible roads that are perfect for getting away from it all. The North Cascades Highway, or Washington State Route 20, is one of them.
Don’t let the word "highway" fool you. This route will take you through some rustic spots and mountainous areas, and you’ll feel like you’re really getting away from it all. You’ll come to some great places to stop along the way, and you can be spontaneous and decide in the moment what sounds like fun and what you’ll skip.
The North Cascades Highway is actually the United States’ first scenic highway. It’s closed from mid-November until April, so summer is the ideal time to see it. Though the route actually begins in the community of Discovery Bay near Port Townsend, the most drivable part begins in Sedro Woolley.
You’ll drive along the Skagit River, eventually coming to the small town of Concrete. If you feel like stopping you can take a few photos of the iconic concrete silo Welcome sign. Continue east and you’ll come to Rockport State Park, a 670-acre park in a forest that has never been logged.
Next you’ll pass the tiny town of Marblemount, and six miles east of Marblemount is the Ross Lake National Recreation Area. The area includes Ross Lake, Gorge Lake and Diablo Lake. The breathtaking views of waterfalls, jagged peaks and forested land are definitely worth stopping for. But if you don’t stop there, definitely park your car at the Diablo Lake Overlook nine miles east of the Ross Lake National Recreation Area for some unparalleled views of Diablo Lake.
Keep driving and you’ll hit Washington Pass, the highest elevation of the route at 5,477 feet. As you cruise through the peaks of the Cascades, don’t forget that this pass was once at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean thousands of years ago.
Continue down the highway and you’ll arrive in Winthrop, a picturesque little town reminiscent of the Old West. Stretch your legs and check out the boardwalk shops like the Trails End Bookstore and 3 Bears Cafe & Quilts, where you should grab lunch after you browse. Winthrop is the perfect place to stop and relax before heading home or driving on.
The North Cascades Highway definitely has some jaw-dropping views and relaxing scenery. In fact, it's one of our state's many beautiful byways perfect for a summer drive.
