To know Leavenworth is to love Leavenworth. You’d be hard-pressed to find a Washingtonian who isn’t charmed by our little Bavarian village nestled in the Cascade Mountains. Still, calling it the most unique town in the world may seem like a bit of a stretch—after all, there are also Bavarian villages elsewhere (such as actual Bavaria). But there really is no other place like this on Earth. Leavenworth is one of a kind.
Leavenworth was incorporated in 1906… and it looked a whole lot different.
Back then, it was a logging town. But the Great Northern Railway Company eventually pulled out of the area, ending the logging industry and the local sawmill. The locals knew they needed to make an incredible effort to improve the economy, so they converted the entire town into a Bavarian village.
The decision to give Leavenworth a German theme had a lot to do with the setting.
The backdrop of the alpine-covered hills really makes it look authentic.
The shops on Commercial Street are what draws most tourists to town.
The gift shops, bookstores, Christmas-themed stores and artisan shops are wonderfully unique.
You can try delicious local wine in one of the many tasting rooms…
… or enjoy an authentic German beer at Munchen Haus.
Leavenworth also has the famous Nutcracker Museum.
It contains over 6,000 nutcrackers and was founded in 1995 by a former ballet dancer and her husband.
You’ll feel like a kid again at The Wood Shop & Hat Shop.
Waterfront Park is spectacular.
You can go from walking around downtown to strolling along the banks of the Wenatchee River in minutes.
Leavenworth loves festivals. There are 17 a year.
There’s Oktoberfest, of course, plus the gorgeous Christmas Lighting Festival, the Bavarian Ice Festival and Art in the Park, to name a few.
You can even go Zip Lining.
How inspiring that Leavenworth went from the brink of extinction to what it is today. Here are some other charming small towns in Washington that are worth visiting.
