You don't have to be starring in "Back to the Future" to travel back in time. In these quaint and historic towns in Washington you'll feel like you've been transported to another era, maybe even another country. No time machine needed!
Winthrop, Washington is a tiny old Western town straight out of the movies. Minus the gunslingers. The town is home to the beautiful Okanogan National Forest as well as antique boardwalks, local boutiques, and restaurants.
What's just as enticing about Winthrop as the old-timey feel is the regular calendar of town events. There's always something going on in Winthrop and it's usually oozing with small town charm.
Ellensburg Washington was founded in 1883 and many of the town's buildings date back to that era. They've been carefully preserved and look both historic and pristine to this day.
In addition to the history-rich downtown, you'll find unusual activities in Ellensburg like their wild west rodeo.
Perhaps most unique is Poulsbo, a small town in the Kitsap Peninsula known as "Little Norway." Poulsbo truly is like a slice of Nordic life right here in the United States Northwest.
At the time of its founding, Poulsbo was inhabited by a number of Nordic immigrants who found the climate similar to their home country of Norway. They built the town in that image and in time it developed that European reputation.
In addition to Nordic architecture and food and Scandinavian shops, you can watch performances and historical reenactments related to Nordic culture.
Whether you're in search of a rich history, unusual experiences, or a European vacation without the airfare, Washington has a lot of offer in its historic towns. Who knew small town life could be so dynamic!
