The Chinook Pass Scenic Byway is one of the most incredible summer drives in Washington (it's breathtaking in the winter as well, but often closed due to the weather). The byway travels through the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and Mount Rainier National Park, delivering some of the most scenic views in the state. Many of the outdoor enthusiasts in our state are lucky enough to experience it regularly, as the area offers abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Most people know the small town of Naches marks the end of the route (or the beginning, depending on where you start). But few people stop and enjoy the little town on the other end, Enumclaw. But this spot is definitely worth exploring.
Enumclaw is located in the middle of flat, level farmlands and dairy farms in the east Puget Sound lowlands.
Mt. Rainier makes a gorgeous backdrop for this quiet community.
Enumclaw definitely has a nostalgic vibe, and life here is decidedly slow-paced.
And while it does see its share of (welcomed) tourists on their way to explore Mt. Rainier, it also has a strong sense of community that caters to the locals.
Locals and tourists alike love the Rockridge Country Market, an apple orchard, cidery, and small market all in one.
This spot is owned and operated by Jason Devela and Misty Frantz, two locals who love the area.
Rockridge carries all kinds of local goodness as well as some standard grocery items.
The wine and the hard cider are made on-site, and you can try a sample of the award-winning sweet cider that is also pressed on-site.
If you're in the mood for a cold brew, check out Cole Street Brewery.
Enumclaw's first craft brewery is open seven days a week.
On a beautiful day, nothing beats sitting on the patio here, enjoying a beer after an exhilarating hike.
Depending on when you visit, you can also take your beer to-go.
Enumclaw is also home to Nolte State Park, a true hidden gem.
This beautiful state park's main highlight is the lovely and peaceful Deep Lake. It's a perfect place for a picnic.
The next time you decide to drive down the Chinook Pass Scenic Byway, take some time to stop and explore Enumclaw.
This is a place that prefers small mom and pop shops to big chain stores and locally grown food to mass produced products. And it's extremely refreshing.
