Although there's an undeniable chill in the air, we've still got a little time before Washington turns into a Winter Wonderland. That means you'll have time for at least one more weekend getaway before the weather becomes unpredictable, so head to one of these tried-and-true destinations to beat cabin fever before it starts.
1. Port Townsend
This cool coastal city is beautiful in any season. In fact, fall and winter bring a quiet beauty and mild temperatures you'll find refreshing.
You could have a nice, fulfilling weekend just strolling the streets of Port Townsend and checking out the shops and restaurants.
But if you're in the area, you should definitely check out Fort Worden State Park.
2. The San Juan Islands
When summer fades and the tourist season slows, the San Juan Islands quiet down. And this is when Washingtonians love to visit most.
From the charming attractions in Friday Harbor to the rural farmland on Lopez Island, there's more to see than could ever be experienced in a single weekend.
We recommend sticking to one island at a time.
3. Poulsbo
Much like Paris, Washington's Little Norway is always a good idea. This Kitsap Peninsula destination is adored by Washingtonians from all walks of life.
Muriel Iverson Williams Waterfront Park and Front Street Gallery are must-sees, but the historic downtown area is where you'll want to spend the most time.
If this postcard-perfect photo doesn't make you want to check out Poulsbo this winter, perhaps the variety of seasonal events will.
4. Coeur d'alene, Idaho
Coeur d'elene sits just over the border from Spokane, and for most Washingtonians, it's just a few hours away from home.
Stay at the elegant Coeur d'alene Resort and you'll be within walking distance of all the delicious eateries and unique shops.
Don't miss a morning hike on Tubbs Hill, which is right next to the resort, but feels like it's a world away.
5. Whidbey Island
Take the ferry from Mukilteo and spend a weekend on the slow-paced Whidbey Island, where you'll find everything from city amenities to state parks.
When you're on Whidbey, sunsets like this are the norm.
Spend as much time in nature as possible.
6. Winthrop
Visit Washington's finest Old West town before winter weather makes the roads impossible to navigate.
Winthrop sits in the heart of the Methow Valley, which features some of the most breathtaking beauty in the state.
Check out the Falls Creek Falls Trail Head and the Winthrop Twin Lakes Loop for some great views of the fall foliage and the first dustings of snow.
7. Vancouver (USA)
Vancouver is just a few miles north of the ultra-hipster city of Portland, but it has a unique character and plenty of appeal all on its own.
The city sits right on the Columbia River, meaning you'll never be far from a perfect waterfront trail.
Esther Short Park, Fort Vancouver and the historic George C. Marshall House are also must-sees, not to mention the charming downtown area.
Washington is full of amazing spots for a weekend away. And if you only have one day to explore, consider one of these day trip destinations before the end of autumn.
