If you've ever made the drive to Bellingham, hopefully you've veered off the beaten path (known as I-5) and checked out Washington's original scenic byway, Chuckanut Drive. Known for its farm fresh food, delightful oysters, and stunning scenery, this 24-mile stretch of road is sometimes referred to as Washington's Big Sur.
There aren't many towns you can stop in along the way on this winding route. But if you do decide to make the drive, come hungry. These little farming communities produce some tasty food, and some of the farm stands, restaurants and bakeries have received national attention.
When you venture off I-5 toward Chuckanut Drive, your first stop is Burlington.
Known as the hub city of Skagit Valley and the gateway to the San Juan Islands, Burlington is a great place to stop and stretch your legs. You'll find plenty of shops, restaurants, and u-pick berry farms (in the summer).
Next, you'll reach Bow, which is probably familiar if you're a foodie.
The Bow-Edison is well-known for its culinary gems, and you'll want to try them all.
Farm to Market Bakery serves homemade pastries, baked goods, and breakfasts, among other things.
As the name suggests, everything is made from scratch, and most of it is local.
Edison is Bow's neighbor—but truth be told, you won't be able to tell you've left one once you're in the other.
That's why this area is known as the Edison-Bow neighborhood.
Edison is nationally known for this gem right here, Breadfarm.
Breadfarm is not your average bakery. Everything here is made from scratch, and the cookies and shelf-stable pantry items are made in small batches, with care.
Chuckanut Drive ends at Bellingham's historic Fairhaven District, which is the perfect place to end up.
If you love the arts, boutique shopping, and (you guessed it) tasty food, you'll fall in love with this historic district.
Have you ever driven up Chuckanut Drive? Where is your favorite place to stop?
