Small towns are the best places to explore the best of what Virginia has to offer. That seems to be especially true in Staunton, which boasts all of our favorite attractions: delicious restaurants, gorgeous outdoor attractions, historical interest, and overall charm. Here's more on why Staunton makes for an excellent day trip destination:
Welcome to Staunton, Virginia, a picture-perfect mountain town that offers visitors and residents a little bit of everything. Whether it's your first time in town or 10th, you'll discover something brand new to enjoy.
In addition to having one of the most charming Main Streets in the state, Staunton also boasts six unique historic districts. Walking through town (and over quite a few hills) you'll learn a lot of history along the way.
In fact, if you stop by the Staunton Historical Society on a Saturday before 10 a.m., you'll enjoy a free historic walking tour through town.
Staunton also happens to be situated close to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. If you're more of an outdoor explorer, you'll fall in love with the countless nearby hikes.
Shenandoah National Park's Rose River Trail is a popular trek less than two hours from downtown.
For something else altogether, stop by the American Shakespeare Theater for a play. It's the only recreation of Shakespeare's indoor theater in the world and it's truly fascinating to experience.
After your day of outdoor adventures and site-seeing, you can enjoy countless mouthwatering restaurants. Photographed below is Mill Street Grill, located in a renovated mill.
So whether you're looking for an awesome new trail or a full day of meandering through town, you'll be delighted you stopped by one of America's most charming small towns that truly has a little bit of everything.
