It just doesn't get much better than Virginia's small towns. Bursting with charm and history, these places help give the entire state its personality and appeal. One prime example is the relatively underrated town of Smithfield, Virginia. It might seem to fly under the radar in some respects, yet it has also been recognized as one of the happiest seaport towns in America. And then, of course, there's the original Smithfield ham, which every Virginian can swear by. Here's more on why this town is secretly the best in all of Virginia:
Founded along the Pagan River not far from Jamestown, Smithfield was established in 1634 as part of the Virginia Colony.
Visiting the historic town today, it's impossible to miss the historic charm that permeates the town of just over 8,000.
Walking downtown, you'll spot plenty of historic architecture and friendly restaurants, many of which carry the famous Smithfield ham on their menu.
As you'll notice on the water tower, the town really is all about "ham, history, and hospitality." In fact, it's the largest pork processor in the world!
There are also tons of delicious barbecue joints around Smithfield, such as Q Daddy's Pitmaster BBQ, photographed below.
In addition to history and ham, Smithfield is also remarkable for its gorgeous natural surroundings. Whether you're strolling through the woods...
...meandering through a field of sunflowers...
...or admiring the breathtaking waterscape near Smithfield Station, you'll simply be in awe of the surrounding beauty.
No matter what aspect draws you to Smithfield, you'll quickly find that this small town will begin to feel like your home away from home.
