Skyline Drive. The Blue Ridge Parkway. Colonial Parkway. It's true that we have an abundance of beautiful and well-known byways in Virginia. Today's feature destination is one that's a bit off the beaten path, yet no less lovely. Mt. Rogers Scenic Byway can be found in southwestern Virginia, traversing the Virginia Highlands and offering drivers some of the state's most treasured views.
To drive along the Mt. Rogers Scenic Byway, which is located within the Jefferson National Forest, is to experience some of the most stunning views you can find in our state.
The road stretches for 60 miles and is actually split into two different segments. The first is a 13-mile stretch between Troutdale and Konnarock, and the second is 32 miles between Damascus and Volney, VA.
As you may have guessed from its name, the byway will take you into the heart of the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, home of the tallest peak in Virginia.
In addition to the Mount Rogers Recreation Area, there are many opportunities for outdoor adventure available along this high-altitude route. Some other major points of interest include the Appalachian Trail, the Virginia Creeper Trail in Damascus, and Grayson Highlands State Park.
The route is so beautiful, in fact, that it's nearly impossible to simply stay in your car the whole time.
When you find an appropriate pull-off, be sure to park your vehicle, take in the fresh mountain air, and perhaps even get a few miles of hiking in.
