With a weekend of cool weather and September in full swing, we've got an eye on the leaves as they prepare to transform into their brilliant fall foliage. It's a little early to spot the signs of fall, but we Virginians know that the months of autumn are ephemeral. With that in mind, we've planned a road trip that will lead you to some of the most magnificent leaf-peeping sites in the state.
While there are plenty off-the-beaten path locations for admiring the leaves, this particular trip leads to our stunning state parks. While you're there, you can take a break from driving and enjoy some of the trails too! For the full interactive map, including addresses, click here.
1. Lake Anna State Park
Whether you're taking a leisurely stroll around the impressive Lake Anna or enjoying the views from a kayak, you won't be disappointed by your detour to this gorgeous state park.
2. James River State Park
The picturesque James River State Park is a preservation of a portion of the Kanawha Canal in Buckingham County. The farm meadows, stretches of shoreline and gorgeous forests lend themselves perfectly to the changing season.
3. Douthat State Park
Stunning in any season, Douthat State Park in Millboro becomes all the more enchanting with its burning hues of red, orange, and gold. While you're there you can take a wooded trail or simply sit back and admire the view from a picnic area.
4. Shenandoah National Park
Where fall foliage is concerned, you won't find a more dramatic or breathtaking view than the one from Shenandoah National Park. Take the iconic Skyline Drive as you continue north through the Shenandoah Valley. Visitors who wish to break up the trip can even book a stay at the Skyland Resort for an immersive experience in nature.
5. Sky Meadows State Park
Located in Northern Virginia's Fauquier County you'll find a stunning 1,800-acre park that shows off the exquisite beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. From this vantage point, you'll see the colors of fall in all their glory.
