Small towns in Virginia are one of the most valuable and characteristic aspects of our state. These places, nearly all of which are historic, tell hundreds of years' worth of stories and culture. Exploring any of these towns would be a day well spent. Tucked away just north of the Shenandoah Valley is such a place. Middleburg makes a delightful stop along your travels and with so much to explore, is a destination unto itself. Here's more on this fascinating small town in Virginia:
With a history that dates back to the Revolutionary War, Middleburg is one of the most picturesque historic small towns in Virginia. The town itself was established in 1787 by Leven Powell, a war lieutenant and statesman. The land was purchased from a cousin of George Washington and still remains an iconic vision of the horse country that is so characteristic of Virginia.
The town of Middleburg is known for both fox hunting and horse racing. Since the 1800s, the town has welcomed visitors near and far to witness these lively events. In fact, this small town is often referred to as the "Nation’s Horse and Hunt Capital." It’s here that you’ll find the National Sporting Library, a prominent research center for horse racing and other field sports.
In addition to these outdoor sports, there are many other facets to Middleburg which make it an excellent place to live or visit. The main streets are decorated with beautiful store fronts and upscale boutiques which invite customers to browse antiques and other local finds.
To sample some of the local produce, be sure to stop by one of the town’s many wineries. Cana Vineyards, shown above, is family-run and offers a beautiful 43-acre overlook that pairs beautifully with the wine. This also makes for a great picnic spot, with amazing views of the nearby Bull Run mountains.
One of the main attractions of Middleburg is the Red Fox Inn and Tavern. Established in 1728, this historic landmark is one of the oldest taverns in the country and also makes for a cozy place to stay the night. Diners can cozy up by the fireplace and enjoy the tavern atmosphere in the same way that visitors have for hundreds of years.
There’s even an alpaca farm to make your visit all the more memorable. Flowing Fleece Farm has been welcoming visitors of all ages since 2005. Meeting the friendly animals and browsing through the unique gifts and clothing is truly an experience.
Whether you have just a few hours or a long weekend to spend in Middleburg, your experience there will be nothing short of delightful. A great meal, shopping, and unforgettable sight-seeing are all just a quick stroll away.
