6 Roads With The Best Windshield Views In All Of Vermont

Explore Vermont's picturesque byways with stunning windshield views during a winter road trip.

With the freezing cold temperatures we're having, why not take a driving road trip to see Vermont in all its frozen glory? Whether you stay in the car or get out for a little exploring along the way, these windshield views of VT are picture perfect. After all, you don't need to be cold to take in the scenery!

1. Shires of Vermont Byway

Take Route 7A from Pownal to Manchester for a perfectly picturesque ride. This trip is only 33 miles so plan to stop along the way and take a closer peek. Even if you don't stop, the views from the windshield are wonderful.

Vermont towns you'll see: Pownal, Bennington, North Bennington Village, Shaftsbury, Arlington, Sunderland and Manchester.

2. Molly Stark Byway

Travel by bustling villages and through the Green Mountain National Forest and take in the sights on this drive through Southern VT.

Vermont towns you'll see: Bennington, Woodford, Wilmington, Marlboro and Brattleboro.

3. Connecticut River National Byway

This lovely drive parallels the Connecticut River and sometimes crosses into New Hampshire. Along the way, you'll travel over the Windsor-Cornish Bridge, a 465-foot covered bridge that passes into New Hampshire. This ride travels along Route 91 in Vermont and Routes 2 and 3 in New Hampshire. Vermont towns you'll see:

Brattleboro, Bellows Falls, Windsor, White River Junction, Wells River and St. Johnsbury.

4. Green Mountain Byway

There are lots of places to stop and get warm on this 11-mile trek from Waterbury to Stowe. The Ben & Jerry's factory, Cold Hollow Cider Mill, and Cabot Cheese Annex are a few places to stop and snack along the way.

Vermont towns you'll see: Waterbury and Stowe.

5. Stone Valley Scenic Byway

Don't miss this scenic trip through the marble quarry towns with rolling hills and picturesque landscapes. Vermont towns you'll see: Hubardton, Castleton, Poultney, Wells, Pawlet, Rupert, Dorset and Manchester.

6. Lake Champlain Byway

This scenic drive has it all - farms, mountains, towns, cities, islands and yes, the magnificent Lake Champlain.

Vermont towns you'll see: The Champlain Islands, Burlington, Middlebury and Vergennes are a few places to note on this 134-mile stretch.

The Spontaneous Road Trip Through Vermont That Is The Perfect Weekend Of Adventure

Over the years, I've had plenty of travel experiences. While some of these adventures were planned, many memorable travels - like stumbling into a local cafe or wandering down a quaint street - were more spontaneous. I put together the following weekend road trip, which includes four Vermont towns that begin with a "B," so you too can "go with the flow" and have a fun-filled outing that's more flexible than a tight itinerary. Read on and enjoy!

As you can see from this guided map, this fun-filled weekend adventure goes from Southern to Northern Vermont and includes about five hours of driving time.

Creamery Covered Bridge

There are over 100 covered bridges in Vermont. While you're likely to pass some during this spontaneous weekend adventure, we suggest beginning this road trip at The Creamery Covered Bridge in Brattleboro. This historical landmark was built in 1879 and is the last remaining of its kind in Brattleboro.

Barre is an ideal place to visit during a spontaneous weekend road trip in Vermont. Along with the infamous Hope Cemetery, the quarry is an impressive site that's due to the stunning blue water and dramatic shape.

The Causeway is a true gem. Feel free to hike or bike when you check out this stunning trail along Lake Champlain. And since this route spans over 13 miles, feel free to explore as much or as little as you'd like.
