No one can deny that Vermont is a wonderful and quirky place.  The scenery will leave you speechless, the outdoor adventures will energize you, the history will render you more knowledgable, and these strange town names in Vermont will make you laugh.

Some small towns in Vermont have names so beautiful that they roll off your tongue such as Montpelier, Quechee and Vergennes.  However there are a few that will make you scratch your head in wonder or perhaps even laugh out loud.  Here are a few that we certainly found amusing.

1. Mosquitoville

The name behind this populated location in the town of Barnet is self explanatory.

2. Brimstone Corners

A section of West Fairlee.

3. Satan's Kingdom

Satan's Kingdom is an unincorporated community in the town of Leicester in Addison County, Vermont, United States. It is located along Vermont Route 53 near the southern shore of Lake Dunmore and just north of Fern Lake.

4. Adamant, formerly known as Sodom

Adamant is a small, unincorporated community in the town of Calais, Vermont in Washington County. The village was originally known as Sodom from its inception prior to the mid-19th century as a granite quarry-town until 1905 when residents petitioned the state legislature for a name change.

5. Canaan

Canaan is the only town in Vermont to share a land border with New Hampshire - the town's far northeastern corner touches the southwestern corner of the town of Pittsburg, NH, and the Connecticut River defines the state line from Canaan southward.

6. Goose Green

Corinth comprises seven villages—East Corinth, West Corinth, South Corinth, Corinth Center, Corinth Corners, Cookeville, and Goose Green. Tim Burton's film Beetlejuice was filmed in East Corinth.

7. Goose City

Goose City is a populated place located within the Town of Dover.

8. Grub Corner

Grub Corner is shown on old maps to be located where Sherburne (now Killington) meets Chittenden and Mendon. Men coming in with logs for the sawmill there could get a shave, a meal and a cup of coffee before returning to the woods.

9. Blissville

Blissville is located in Castleton, Vermont. This classic home certainly looks like bliss!

10. Stump Station

Little is known about Stump Station, other than it's located in the town of Shoreham. Leave a comment if you know more about this place.

11. Rhode Island Corners

This cemetery in Hinesburg (Rhode Island Corners) was named by the VOAC (Vermont Old Association of Cemeteries) where the oldest burial was in 1798 and the cemetery is still being used.

12. Lazy Lady Island

This lovely island off Saint Albans bay is a perfect place to relax and be lazy.

13. Hardscrabble

Did you know that any child from the Hardscrabble community in Wheelock admitted to Dartmouth can attend tuition-free? The Ivy League university owes its existence to Wheelock, and in gratitude, Dartmouth continues to honor a 175-year-old commitment made when it was a struggling college desperate to feed its students and pay its bills.

14. Birdland

Located on the island of North Hero, streets, restaurants and inns are named after the quaint name Birdland.

15. Baltimore

The Baltimore Covered Bridge was built in 1870 by Dennis Allen and Granville LeLand to serve the town of Baltimore, Vermont. In 1967 it was deemed unsafe and closed. In 1970 the bridge was moved and restored by Milton Graton.

16. Brooklyn

A small section of Mount Tabor, which is said to have the "Sneakiest Speed Trap" in the United States.

17. Michigan

Not the state, silly! There is a place in Chittendon named Michigan.

18. Kansas

There's no place like home, especially if home is in Kansas, Vermont (in Sunderland, Bennington County.)

19. Jamaica

This isn't exactly what the tropical vacations in the other Jamaica look like, but this place in Jamaica, Vermont looks like it has some interesting finds.

20. Holland

You won't find a red light district in this northern Vermont town!

21. Peru

Peru is a town in Bennington County. There is a monument there which marks a camp of John Stark on his way from NH to Bennington.

22. Moscow

Pictured is the annual antique car show in Moscow, part of Stowe, Vermont.

23. Egypt

A lovely little place in Fairfield is referred to as Egypt by the locals.

24. Athens

Athens is a quaint town in Windham County, and perhaps a fun piece of Vermont trivia to know.

25. Berlin

Berlin, Vermont is much different than Berlin, Germany.

26. Olympus

Olympus is a little neighborhood in Bethel.

27. Ticklenaked Pond

While Ticklenaked Pond isn't a town, region or neighborhood, with a name like this, it can't go without making note.
