Who says island life is only for places along the ocean's coast? Not us! Vermont has a beautiful set of islands and they are incredible to visit. Burton Island State Park is one of the special places in the Champlain Islands with it's remote location, camping sites, hiking trails and charming bistro. Let's take a look at this remote island in VT that you're absolutely going to love.
Burton Island State Park is only accessible by boat. You can easily get there by taking the state’s passenger ferry from the Kamp Kill Kare State Park located at 2714 Hathaway Point Rd., St. Albans, VT 05481.
The Island Runner passenger ferry takes people and bikes between Kamp Kill Kare and Burton Island several times a day. It operates from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend and takes about 10 minutes.
If you have your own boat, great! There are moorings and a marina available.
That's right, this is a boat-only island. No cars allowed!
There are 3 miles of shoreline for you to enjoy on Burton Island.
The Burton Island Bistro has all your basic needs covered. This little store sells camping goods, beer, wine and ice, and the cafe serves breakfast and lunch as well as food to go.
You can make a reservation up to 11 months in advance for one of their 14 campground tent sites, 26 lean-to sites or 4 remote tent sites.
There are wonderful hiking trails, and the park's interpreter program has activities such as night hikes, nature crafts and games, campfire programs and animal explorations.
Did you know that when the park opened in the 1960s, plans included building a causeway to access the island?
Luckily that plan was dismissed and a marina was built instead. Ferry service started in the 1980s and Burton Island has remained car-free.
