For a little state, Vermont sure has a lot to offer. From our groundbreaking decrees to our friendly nature, there really is no place like the Green Mountain State to set you apart from everyone else. How, you ask? Well, let us tell you a few things that you can only brag about if your from VT.
1. We know how to take a REAL hike.
Hiking and Vermont go together like peanut butter and jelly. And The Long Trail is the best hike in the state.
2. You like those SS checks?
It all started here. The first Social Security check was issued to Ida M. Fuller of Ludlow who received check #000-000-001 for $22.54, January 31, 1940.
3. Vermont was the first state to abolish slavery.
The Vermont 1777 constitution entitles Vermont to claim to be the first U.S. state to have abolished slavery.
4. McNo.
Montpelier is the only state capital that doesn't have a McDonalds.
5. We have the best foliage around.
We know it, you know it.
6. We all respect the environment.
Sure, recycling is everywhere, but protecting our planet has to be a team effort. Here, we ALL make an effort to protect our environment.
7. There are sooooo many grades to choose from.
We have REAL choices, not just Aunt Jemima and Log Cabin fakes.
8. We respect each other's opinions.
Town meeting day has always been an important part of small town Vermont. This Norman Rockwell painting says it all.
9. If not for Vermont, how would you send mail?
Vermont issued the first stamp. Philatelists (people who study and collect stamps) credit Brattleboro with producing America's first postage stamp in 1846. Stamp that!
10. Do you like those rides up the mountain?
You're welcome. The first rope tow for skiers in the United States was installed in Woodstock in 1934.
11. We pioneered gay rights.
In 2000, the Vermont civil union bill was a landmark in the fight over gay marriages. For the first time, a state allowed gay couples to have all the same benefits as married couples under state law.
12. If you can't fix something, we can.
That's right, someone from Vermont can fix something anytime, anywhere.
13. We have a presidential flair.
Vermont has produced 2 of the 45 presidents.
14. You want to talk medals?
Vermont had the most American Olympians per capita at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
