Southern Utah is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. From its natural arches and red rocks to unique desert landscapes and crystal-blue lakes, there truly is something for everyone. I grew up in this part of the state and each time I return, I am always amazed at its beauty and the multitude of outdoor adventures and activities in Utah. That’s why I want to share some of my favorite places all within a short distance of one another. Featuring a waterfall hike, glampground, unique state park, and lesser-known reservoir, this two-day itinerary is just one more way to explore southern Utah and fall in love with the Beehive State.
From national parks and campgrounds to waterfalls, canyons, and more, there is so much to love about America’s natural splendor — and June, designated as Great Outdoors Month, is the perfect time to get outside.
In total, you will travel approximately 30 miles and this itinerary only requires 45 minutes of drive time. This short route allows you to stop and enjoy each and every destination on this outdoor adventure in southern Utah.
Dine at Hell’s Backbone Grill and Farm
Before we even begin our adventure, we are going to fuel up with some of the freshest and most delicious dishes in southern Utah. This award-winning restaurant features American fare with fresh ingredients that are grown right on the restaurant’s farm. And not only will the food make a lasting impression, but the restaurant’s vibe is casual and friendly and the views are pretty spectacular.
Hike to Lower Calf Creek Falls
Lower Calf Creek Falls may be one of the most well-known waterfall hikes in Utah and for good reason. To reach the falls, you will have to trek nearly three miles one-way, but the trail is relatively flat and easy. Along the way, you’ll also find Fremont-style pictographs, wildflowers, and wildlife. Plus, the falls at the end are beautiful.
This waterfall plunges nearly 130 feet into a beautiful natural pool. If the weather is warm, you might just want to splash around in the water to cool off before you head back to your vehicle. It’s beautiful and refreshing!

Stay at Yonder Escalante, a charming glampground in southern Utah
While there are several different places to stay in this area of the state, one of our favorites is Yonder Escalante. This unique glampground features custom-designed cabins and vintage renovated airstreams so you can have a good night's sleep under the stars without “roughing it.”
Each accommodation features all types of amenities to ensure your stay is comfortable. Plus, you can enjoy many included attractions and activities like a swimming pool, hot tub, and drive-in movie theater. If you want to tackle this two-day trip in southern Utah in your RV, 67 pull-in RV sites are also available.
Explore Escalante Petrified Forest State Park
For your final day, you’ll begin at Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, just north of the small town of Escalante. This unique state park is where you can learn all about petrified wood, dinosaur bones, fossils, and more. Take a hike around the state park to view some of the incredible wonders and just enjoy the views. And you'll also want to check out the 50-foot petrified tree. You can view the entire tree from roots to tip and it's one sight you will be sad to miss.
Kayak at Wide Hollow Reservoir
The final stop is nearby — Wide Hollow Reservoir. You won’t have to drive very far to finish off your day fishing, canoeing, kayaking, or just relaxing next to this reservoir. Keep in mind that motorized boats are prohibited on this body of water but you are welcome to swim, splash, and soak in the moments of this perfect outdoor adventure.
