Utah is a land of many opportunities. With many opportunities come many choices. You can ski in the mountains and golf in the valleys. You can eat a burger or a fine French meal. A typical day in Utah might mean that you get to choose to take a hike, or shop in a bookstore or support your local farmers at the farmers market.
Here are 14 of the best decisions you can make in Utah.
1. Take TRAX to the Jazz game.
Parking is stressful and crowded. Come out of the game and hop on TRAX to get home, instead.
2. Go for a hike instead of watching TV.
Your show will be there later, when it’s raining or snowing outside. Get out and go for a hike while the weather’s nice!
3. Shop at IKEA on a Sunday.
In Utah, much of the population is at church on Sunday. Avoid the Saturday crowds by doing your shopping that day (as long as you won’t suffer from religious guilt). Whatever you do, avoid IKEA like the plague on Tuesday - that’s the day that kids eat free, and it’s a madhouse.
4. Vote.
Exercise your civic rights and vote this November. Maybe you feel like your vote doesn’t count? It does - even if your candidate doesn’t win.
5. Choose an independent film.
There’s no shortage of crash-em-up, superhero action movies in the theaters. Opt for something a little different - see an independent film at the Broadway or Tower. If you’ve never done this before, you might be surprised. If you’re already a frequent patron, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
6. Adopt a homeless pet.
Utah has plenty of pets who need homes. Visit your local shelter, or stop by Best Friends Animal Society (in Sugarhouse or Kanab). Not only will your new pup or kitty get a fabulous new home, you’ll find a new friend for life.
7. Marry a Utahn
Utahns make the best spouses - we're all gorgeous, talented, patient and fabulously rich. Well, that might not be true for all Utahns...but we're pretty great people anyway.
8. Learn to snow or water ski.
Utah’s snow is the best on earth, and we have plenty of gorgeous ski resorts that have wonderful, patient instructors to help you learn. If you’re more of a summer person, learn to waterski! Utah’s many lakes and reservoirs are the perfect way to cool off on a hot, summer day.
9. Take your vacation time.
Do you know that many Americans don’t take advantage of their vacation time each year? Don’t be one of them! Rent a houseboat at Lake Powell, go camping in the High Uintas or take the kids to Lagoon for a staycation.
10. Get cultured.
Utah offers so many amazing cultural opportunities. Choose from one of many live theater venues, opera, ballet, symphony and art museums.
11. Go country.
One you’ve visited the symphony, opera or ballet, expand your horizons even more. Attend a rodeo and see how the pros ride bucking broncos or crazed bulls. Listen to some country music, laugh at the antics of the clowns and eat some BBQ. An important part of Utah’s heritage is its Western history.
12. Shop local.
Avoid the big box store next time and shop local. You’re helping Utahns make a living, and keeping your consumer dollars in our state. And, you’re also probably getting excellent service to boot!
13. Catch your dinner.
Do you know that some people actually pay money at a restaurant for a delicious rainbow trout? Catch your own and cook it over a campfire - there’s nothing like it in the world. Follow your meal with a tasty dessert of s’mores.
14. Get out of Utah.
Seriously. Just leave. Get on a plane and visit some other interesting places in the world. Then, when you return, you’ll be reminded just how lucky you are to live in Utah.
