Is there anything more exhilarating than the open road? If you're like most RV travelers, you can be ready to take on an epic adventure at the drop of a hat. And while finding bucket-list-worthy places in the USA to see isn't a challenge, it can sometimes be tricky to find amazing places to stay. Well, look no further, because we've outlined 12 magnificent travel destinations that RV travelers should add to their bucket list. In addition to legendary landmarks, we've also pinpointed some amazing RV campgrounds. Let's start exploring!
1. Acadia National Park, Maine
There's so much to love about Acadia National Park: the rocky headlands, mesmerizing views, and variety of wildlife habitats. If you're up for a true Northeastern adventure, this special park is hard to beat. Fortunately, there are three campgrounds within the park's confines that offer RV camping, so you'll have the perfect place to stay. Blackwoods Campground is just 15 minutes from Bar Harbor, and features back-in and pull-through sites.
2. Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia
Colonial Williamsburg may not be the first destination that comes to mind when thinking of epic RV destinations in the U.S., but trust us when we say that it's a place unlike anywhere else in the country. You'll feel as though you've traveled back in time as you explore the historic buildings and feast on traditional American fare. This is a great spot for beginning RV-ers, too, since it's fairly easy to navigate. As for a place to camp near Williamsburg, we'd recommend Machicomoco State Park, which offers sites with both electric and water hookups.
3. Niagara Falls, New York
Niagara Falls is one of those bucket-list-worthy destinations that never fails to inspire. It simply must be seen to be believed. And, since you'll be camping nearby, be sure to check out the falls at night for an amazing nighttime spectacle, sometimes even accompanied by fireworks! A convenient place to camp near Niagara Falls is Four Mile Creek State Park, which boasts spacious, level sites, and water and electric hookups.
4. The Florida Keys
If you're looking for an incredible RV road trip during the winter months, look no further than the Florida Keys. While most of the country will be experiencing freezing temperatures, you'll be headed south to a little slice of paradise. Just make sure to make a reservation as far in advance as possible -- this is a popular RV and camping destination! One that we recommend would be Bahia Honda State Park.
5. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
The magic of the Grand Canyon cannot be overstated. Whether you've seen it just once or one hundred times, its magnitude is nearly incomprehensible. Looking for a more off-the-grid experience? The West Rim of the canyon offers adventures such as helicopter tours and even the famous Skywalk Bridge. For camping, head to Mather Campground, which is open year-round and can accommodate RVs (as long as they are 30 feet or less).
6. Sequoia National Park, California
If seeing the Grand Canyon didn't make you feel tiny, then surely standing beneath the towering giants at Sequoia National Park will! Exploring the world's largest trees is an experience you won't soon forget, but you'll also love viewing the region's striking foothills and rushing waterfalls. Plus, it's a very RV-friendly spot; there are actually six campgrounds at Sequoia National Park that offer RV camping. We'd recommend Dorst Creek Campground.
7. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
It's one of the most popular RV destinations in the world, and if you don't mind braving the crowds, you'll be rewarded with the adventure of a lifetime at Yellowstone National Park. Characterized by hydrothermal attractions, this park is a treasure trove of colors and wildlife. There's simply so much to experience at Yellowstone, so plan on staying for as long as you can. We'd recommend Bridge Bay Campground, which is situated at an elevation of nearly 8,000 feet!
8. The Outer Banks, North Carolina
There's something so alluring about North Carolina's Outer Banks. If you are up for a little bit of a rugged, coastal adventure, these unspoiled beaches promise to impress. Highway 12 runs north to south for the majority of the Outer Banks Islands and it's a well-maintained two-lane highway. One of the best campgrounds on the Outer Banks for RV travel is the Frisco Woods Campground. You'll find sites that offer full hookups and even some shade.
9. Hocking Hills, Ohio
Ohio is supremely underrated when it comes to RV travel. You'll quickly dispel any notion of Ohio being a drive-thru state the moment you arrive at Hocking Hills State Park. The crown jewel of southeast Ohio, Hocking Hills is characterized by waterfalls, rock formations, and epic gorges. One of the best places to stay with your RV is the Hidden Valley RV campground. Each site offers water hookups, fire pits, and picnic tables. It's also pet-friendly!
10. New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans offers so much in the way of history, culture, and scenery, that it's truly a bucket-list-must. And you'll be delighted to hear that it's a surprisingly RV-friendly place to visit. Just 13 miles from the heart of the city, Bayou Segnette State Park is an excellent choice. While here, you'll also experience a dose of nature and wildlife.
11. Galveston, Texas
For those looking for an affordable beach trip, Galveston is the perfect choice. Galveston Island State Park is a convenient place to park your RV and enjoy all that the charming island has to offer. Campsites that are close to the beach and partial hook-ups are just two of the many reasons to make your trip to this corner of the Lone Star State.
12. The Great Smoky Mountains
Last but certainly not least, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an epic RV road trip destination. You'll need to plan a bit in advance because some of the windier roads in the park don't allow RVs (namely, Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, Balsam Mountain Road, Greenbrier Road, Heintooga Ridge Road, and Rich Mountain Road). One nearby campground that will provide all the necessary amenities and hookups for your RV is Look Rock Campground in Walland, TN.
Well, there you have it! The best RV campgrounds and destinations across the USA for you and your loved ones to explore. So load up the RV -- or rent one if you need to -- and hit the road!
