This article goes out to everyone who thinks that Texas is nothing but flat, boring plains and tumbleweeds. If you're a motorcycle rider, chances are you're already familiar with this drive, but it's still just as much fun in a car. Known as the "Twisted Sisters," these three connecting Ranch Roads in the Hill Country have over 200 twists and turns between them. Whether you're on a bike or in a car, the route is an exhilarating experience you won't soon forget. With the wind whipping against your windshield, curves steering you close to hillsides with steep drop-offs, and towering rocks on either side creating narrow tunnels, it's basically a free roller coaster ride. See it for yourself:
You can begin the drive on any of the three Ranch Roads - this particular rider just happened to start on 335. Should you do the same, you'll head south past Barksdale until you hit RR 337 near Camp Wood.
The first 1/3 of the route parallels the Nueces River, making for some absolutely incredible vistas. Make a few pit stops to take in the unparalleled beauty - and maybe consider checking out the Devil's Sinkhole in nearby Rocksprings before you get started. It's home to over four million Mexican Free-Tailed Bats!
The wind will whip against your car in a violent manner, almost as if it's trying to crack the windows and enter your vehicle. As terrifying as that sounds, it's even more exhilarating.
Brace yourself for an incredible sharp curve as you enter Camp Wood, where Ranch Road 335 ends and 337 begins. You'll head northeast at a 45 degree angle for a good while...and then the real fun begins.
You won't believe the amount of twists and turns on 337. There are over 65 loops in the first 15 miles alone (about half the road!)
That means that by the time you've reached the end, you'll have changed direction over 130 times. Hope you don't get dizzy easily! If you're willing to take a little detour, keep heading east on 337 past Leakey until you reach Vanderpool. Located there is Lost Maples State Natural Area, one of the most breathtaking parks in Texas. Just head straight back the way you came afterwards to set off on the final leg of the journey.
The last "sister" of the drive starts near Leakey. You'll follow 336, with all its steep ascents, sharp declines, and twists and turns a bit too close to the hillside for comfort, due north until you reach Highway 41.
Along the way, you'll see wide open land for miles with sprawling ranches dotted along the roadside. If you're looking to make a mini vacation out of it, feel free to stop in at Riding River Ranch for the night. There's a gorgeous turquoise swimming hole, fishing, hiking, and Jeep trails! Oh, and you absolutely can't pass up Garvins Store, located a few miles east of the intersection of 337 and 41. Several people on YouTube swear the best chopped beef sandwich in Texas can be found there!
