We all want to spend some quality time near a body of water since the scorching Texas sun is beating down on us full-force, but not everyone has time to spend a week or more on vacation. Luckily, these five waterfront cities have just enough attractions for a fun-filled day without leaving you feeling like you missed out on anything. What a great way to kick off summer!
1. South Padre Island
Although primarily known as a Spring Break destination, South Padre is perfect for a summer daytrip as well. It has the most beautiful beaches in Texas, a Schlitterbahn (AKA the best waterpark in the country), a world renowned sand castle competition, some of the best July 4th fireworks in the nation, and much more. It's also home to largest saltwater fishing contest in Texas! The restaurants are amazing as well, with places like Joe's Oyster Bar and Beachside Bar and Grill offering fresh, delicious seafood in a laid-back, island atmosphere.
2. Corpus Christi
Corpus is one of the largest coastal cities in Texas and a huge tourist hub. It's no secret why with attractions like the USS Lexington, Corpus Christi Marina, Water Street Market, and Padre Island National Seashore. You can also dine hundreds of feet in the air and gaze out over the ocean at the Republic of Texas Steakhouse.
3. Port Aransas
Less than an hour drive from Corpus, the small community of Port Aransas is a perfect daytrip destination if you like peace and relaxation. It's known as the fishing capital of Texas and features over 6 miles of beach where you can lounge in solitude and enjoy the gentle crashing of the waves. You can golf, boat, kayak, collect seashells at Mustang Island, and dine at some of the many popular restaurants in the town.
4. Galveston
Galveston is one of the most popular tourist cities in Texas, and for good reason. There's so much to do here, from a day at the beach to strolling through the Strand and perusing the various shops and restaurants, riding rides at Pleasure Pier to admiring the old-world architecture that abounds throughout the city. Plus, some of the best seafood around can be found at Gaido's, a longtime fixture on the island known for its exquisite cuisine and excellent service.
5. Rockport
A relatively small fishing town with a population of just under 9,000, Rockport attracts thousands of visitors each summer for its various marine recreation options such as boating, fishing, duck hunting, swimming, and bird watching. It hosts several festivals yearly including the Oyster Fest, Seafair, and a wine festival. There are also several historic sites like the Fulton Mansion and Texas Maritime Museum as well as a downtown aquarium and heritage district.
