We know what you're thinking: a mountain town in Texas? Surely we must be mistaken. But it's true, y'all - Texas isn't all plains and tumbleweeds. We actually have several mountains in Texas with towns sprinkled throughout their peaks and valleys. Presidio is one such town, and it definitely deserves a spot on your travel bucket list.
The saying "getting away from it all" was first spoken with a place like Presidio in mind. With a population of under 5,000, this desert wonderland is the ideal Texas mountain town to unplug and experience the true beauty of nature.
The town is within walking distance of Ojinaga, Mexico, which is one of the safest cities in the country. Feel free to cross the international bridge and explore the additional tourist attractions and authentic culture on the other side.
The views in Presidio are truly unparalleled. No camera, even those of the highest quality imaginable, can do justice to the magnificent Chinati Mountains and incredible vistas of Big Bend Ranch State Park.
Big Bend Ranch State Park is home to two of the tallest waterfalls in Texas, so be sure to carve out some time to see these cascading beauties.
With some of the darkest skies in the world, stargazing is a popular activity here. The nearby
McDonald Observatory hosts "star parties" regularly that allow you to see majestic celestial bodies in an unadulterated state.
Presidio has an extremely rich history dating as far back as the Exodus. More recently, the Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca arrived in 1535, and in the late 1800s, Comanches, and Mexican bandits (including the infamous Pancho Villa) raided the Texas mountain town often.
