The architecture in Gruene hasn't hasn't changed much throughout the years.

In 1974, architect Chip Kaufman discovered these antiquated buildings while kayaking down the Guadalupe River. He was immediately drawn to them. The area, originally slated to become a housing development, is full of buildings dating to the late 1800s.

Kaufman fought to retain the historical significance of these buildings, and eventually got Gruene a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, these old buildings are home to dozens of restaurants, shops and wineries.
