Oh, Nashville. Only you can experience wintertime in a way that borders on wild discomfort and a cultish obsession. Only Nashville boasts hipsters gallivanting in the snow with coffee cups in hand for their social media followers alongside harried businessfolk who can't seem to figure out how to drive in the slush and snow on the ground. It's a brave new world, friends, and Nashville is still figuring it out. Aren't we all?
1. Dealing with the sudden slush on the road.
Most of the time Nashville finds itself dealing with slush, a strange middle-ground between the dangers of ice and the fluffy banks of snow that plague the north. Just...plan to leave for work early and drive slow, folks.
2. Wait...what's a snow plow?!
Even when the city is doused in a solid layer of snow, good luck finding a snow plow. Nashville only has one, which means quite a few folks find themselves snowed in for a few days, even in the middle of the city.
3. Radnor Lake is empty for once!
Ever since the city experienced a boom in population our hiking trails have become inundated with folks all. day. long. If it's chilly outside, chances are you'll be able to find a parking spot AND hike in silence out at Radnor Lake.
4. Keep those summer clothes close!
Especially when it comes to the transitionary seasons, autumn and spring. You never know when you might get hit with a random 80 degree day in the dead of winter. It's quite...odd. Although incredibly pleasant.
5. Prepare for some traffic!
When Nashville drivers find themselves in quite literally ANY kind of rough weather, the highways and backroads become wildly clogged. Just plan for it and keep your eyes on the road, friends.
6. It's hockey season!
Ever since the Predator's experienced a resurgence a few years ago, Nashville has become a rabid hockey city. Wintertime marks the start of the season, which means you'll be seeing bright yellow ALL over the place.
7. Don't miss the fun at Opry Mills...
...or the crowds! Nashville does a great job showing out for Christmastime, and one of the best spots to experience it all is the famed Opry Mills Hotel. Their free Christmas lights show boasts over a million lights, which means your little ones are going to be completely in awe.
8. Hey transplants - buy a jacket!
You're bound to see quite a few Tennessee newbies without the proper winter clothes. We may be in the south, but it still gets cold in January, folks!
9. Fight the traffic to Gatlinburg.
Stay in a cabin and enjoy the quiet, beautiful mountain views. It's a magical experience once you get off the highway.
10. Get ready for some of the prettiest views you've ever seen.
We love Nashville every day of the year, but there's something so magical about the beauty of a snow-crested skyline.
It's alright, Nashville, no worries - you can drown your wintertime sorrows in a tub of chocolate. Really. Buy it all on this chocolate road trip!
