Tennessee is known as one of the most beautiful places to be during the wintertime, without the immersive snow and wicked ice of the north. We do, however, have a bit of magic during the holiday season. Whether you're looking to enjoy a moment with a cup of cocoa or at the ballet, we've found precisely where to go.
1. Take a hike in the snowy Great Smoky Mountains.
There are multiple ways for you to enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains, and it's the depth of winter that truly gives the range a bit of depth.
2. Take in the nationally renowned Holiday Lights at Cheekwood.
They claim over a million lights in their display this year, and the $25 price really doesn't hit too hard when it comes to a beautiful event - once a year.
3. Find your way to Rock City Gardens' Enchanted Garden of Light.
More than 30 holiday scenes are active this year, with thousands of LED lights that give the whole of Lookout Mountain and holiday glow. The display runs nightly through December 31st, and gives the kind of holiday satisfaction that only comes during the sweetest of Christmas times.
4. Attend a holiday production at the local theatre.
The Nashville Ballet currently has "The Nutcracker" running, but you can also catch "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" on the other side of town. Both are Tennessee traditions that reach back absolute decades.
5. The Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman is positively magical.
The Grand Ole Opry moves from its spot on the other side of town back home to the Ryman during the Christmas season, and there's something magical about the historic show being played out where it began.
6. Head to the Memphis zoo for a bit of light and charm.
Fan favorites of the zoo can enjoy a Christmas tree that stretches high in the air and scads of holiday music at the Memphis zoo. It's the one spot in the state that caters to your love of animals AND the holiday season.
7. Take in the holiday lights at Opryland.
With thousands and thousands of lights and a Hallway of Trees, Opryland takes the proverbial cake when it comes to stunning displays.
8. All aboard the Polar Express!
There are multiple railways across the state that offer a Polar Express ride for you and your little ones, but the most popular include spots in Nashville and Chattanooga.
9. Pop down to Franklin for a Christmas showing at their historic theatre.
Make sure to buy tickets early, though - they sell out insanely fast!
10. Find your way around Radnor Lake.
This Nashville hike is great for both you and the littles, as the terrain is easy to navigate and only stretches a couple of miles.
11. Spend a bit of Christmas with the king.
Graceland is known for their stunning Christmas lights and displays, giving Memphis a lovely bit of history that bites straight through to the music of childhood.
