Tennessee is full of transplants. Folks that realized their state was wildly subpar, so they made the emotional, difficult trip cross-country to cheer on the Vols and indulge in buttery biscuits from heaven. They may not stretch back generations, but they chose us - which is pretty cool, if you ask us. Here's a tip though, you Tennessee transplants - you have some things to do on your way to becoming a true Tennessean. Here's a few to get you going in the right direction.
13) Take a romantic weekend away to Gatlinburg.
It's the honeymooner destination for Tennesseans, chock full of great cabins and some solid fare.
12) Catch a Predators game.
Yes, it's why downtown Nashville bathes in yellow every once in a while. Get used to it, buy a dang jersey already!
11) Find your favorite fried chicken - NOT at a restaurant.
That sweet lady from church? She has one. Your neighbors? They have one. You should have one.
10) Unlearn how to drive in weather.
Yeah, yeah - we KNOW we're bad at it. It's because our weather is so awesome all the time that we don't really need to learn. (Right...?)
9) Accept church traffic as the norm.
Don't even try to get around on Sundays - you're going to have a rough go of it. Walk.
8) Understand that Krystal is better.
It's just something you get, no need to try them out yourself. Here in Tennessee? We just know.
7) Cheer on the Sounds with the city behind you.
An all-American pastime meets our favorite capital city.
6) It's Sunday, so you assume it's closed...
Tennessee seems to turn into a wasteland on Sundays. Just stay home. Or go to church.
5) Perfect the family biscuit recipe.
Dig it out of your recipe box, underneath all those non-southern casseroles and heavy breads. You don't have to slice a biscuit, you know.
4) Know that a bottle of Jack is perfect for every occasion.
Weddings, funerals, Sunday grilling, dinner and lunch. Doesn't really matter - because everyone is sure to appreciate it.
3) Go to a show at the Ryman.
It's the Mother Church, where legends like Cash and Cline crooned from the stage. Now you can check their calendar for your favorites artists and their swing in the spotlight.
2) Learn to tell one river city from another.
We have quite a few - need a hint? (This one's Chattanooga!)
1) Take a hike in the Great Smoky Mountains.
You'll not only be a solid Tennessean at this point, but you'll also understand why it is the most visited national park in the US.
How'd you like them apples? Let us know your thoughts!
