Is any small town in the American south complete without a water tower? We're going to go with...probably not. The first thing you may see when you come upon is the "City of Jamestown" water tower, pictured above.
The town is best known as the "portal to Big South Fork Country," and is also the famed home of a series of revolutionaries and historical figures like World War I hero Sgt. Alvin C. York.
The town was established in 1823 and initially served as the county seat for Fentress County. Before the town's founding, a semi-permanent Cherokee village occupied the surrounding area. It was originally known as "Sand Springs" for the natural bubblers that are located throughout the greater natural area.
Jamestown is truly a beautiful place to visit, and there are many hiking trails and parks both around the city and throughout. Located on the western edge of the Tennessee Cumberland Plateau, Jamestown boasts a series of rock and water features.
Here you can see the historic Fentress County Jail. The building operated as both the sheriff's residence and county jail from its inception in 1898 to its closure in 1979. If you visit, you'll find historic markers throughout the city. During the Civil War, Fentress County sent four companies to the Confederate Army and three to the Union Army, which has solidly placed the town on the historic map.
If you're looking for a natural spring, you can find the last of its kind in Mark Twain City Park. The spring once provided water to the family of John Clemens, famed writer Samuel Clemens' father, before he moved to Missouri.
