There's no doubt about it: the heart of Tennessee can be found in its small towns, in its tight circles and strong local communities, along tiny main streets, and in restaurants where everyone knows your name. 1. Bell Buckle
The town of Bell Buckle, Tennessee is tucked away amongst the hills of the mid-state and is known for its stunning Victorian homes and churches. The downtown area plays host to the annual RC Cola & Moon Pie Festival, and a series of restaurants and boutiques will keep you interested all afternoon long. With a population of only about 500 people over a very small area, Bell Buckle is a laid-back place where neighbors are like family.
2. Jonesborough
Jonesborough has been honorably dubbed, "Tennessee's oldest town," and the tight-knit community can be found at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. You'll find everything from Christmas Church Strolls to haunted history tours downtown. As of 2020, the population was just under 6,000 residents. Visit the Tennessee downtown today to see museums, inns, and plentiful historic places.
3. Lynchburg
The Lynchburg Historic Square is like a step back in time, from the old courthouse building to the old jail museum. Make sure you pop into the shops and restaurants located down the entire street in this downtown Tennessee neighborhood and snag something to eat while you're at it! Located in the south-central region of Tennessee, Lynchburg is the birthplace of many notable people, including Davy Crockett and Little Richard.
4. Franklin
Franklin, Tennessee is perhaps one of the most well-known towns in the state of Tennessee, though it can't quite be called a "small town" anymore. Instead join the throngs of newcomers down the 16-block historic district as you shop, eat, and socialize the day away. Only 21 miles from Nashville, the town of Franklin is a blossoming community, with numerous parks and festivals throughout the year.
5. Dayton
The town of Dayton is located right on the riverfront, and its main street is actually accredited by the Main Street program through Tennessee Main Street and the National Main Street Center. The entire downtown Tennessee street is chock full of salons, boutiques, and restaurants, making it the perfect spot for the whole family between Nashville and Knoxville. Dayton lends its rich history to its famous buildings, like the Rhea County Courthouse where a famous "Monkey Trial" case was held in 1925.
6. Cookeville
Little Cookeville is located smack dab between Knoxville and Nashville, and the local community has fostered a downtown area that is both historic and beautifully maintained. Stop by for a bite to eat or an ice cream cone, because this Putnam County gem is a true must-visit. The town of about 35,000 people has seen much growth over the years, but it still holds small-town values close to its heart.
7. Gatlinburg
Here's the thing: Gatlinburg, Tennessee is not a small town. It is, however, the main vacation spot for small-town folks and its wild downtown offerings make it perfect for folks of all ages. Expect quirky shops and family-friendly eateries that round out any vacation experience. In addition to plenty of nightlife and entertainment, visitors to Gatlinburg enjoy picturesque mountain scenery and lots of outdoor attractions as well, making it one of the best small downtowns in Tennessee.
