When people think of Gatlinburg, the Great Smoky Mountains tend to be one of the first things that comes to mind. This beautiful town is indeed surrounded by the most stunning mountains in our state. It is also true that this Tennessee town is home to some wild and fun attractions. Gatlinburg is an amazing place to visit and vacation, but there is a hidden gem that not many people may know about. Because it is overshadowed by our national park, it might go unnoticed but allow us to introduce you to Mynatt Park in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
If you are heading to a popular scenic drive in the Smokies from downtown Gatlinburg you will go right past Mynatt Park.
The road parallels a creek featuring the breathtaking beauty for which the Smokies are well known. Moss-covered rocks, small cascading waterfalls, and the soothing sound of running water... this little park's greatest feature is the stream itself, where you can often find children splashing or folks fishing.
You might be surprised to learn that the Great Smoky Mountains are known as the "salamander capital of the world" because of the dense population of these slithery creatures. By the creek, you can turn over rocks and search the muddy shores for these brilliantly colored amphibians.
Salamanders are not the only animal that finds its way into the park...
The beloved black bears that live in abundance in our national park wander into town looking for a quick bite to eat. It is not an uncommon sight to see these hulking beasts meandering around. However, for the most part, they keep to themselves and away from people, but it is a good reminder to always pack in and pack out while enjoying the creekside picnic tables.
There are great recreational options in the park too. Play a game of tennis, pickleball, or basketball on these well-maintained courts.
Kids love the playground and is a great place to allow your little ones space to get out that pent-up energy. While traveling I always try to find places like this that allow my children a place to play and a scenic backdrop for lunch. Whenever we can find the best of those two options it's always a winner.
There are walking trails throughout the park and the most iconic place is the pedestrian footbridge. Covered with the dense forest that you find in this mountainous area makes for a particularly beautiful spot.
Many people have used this as a background for a small wedding since it's so scenic!
Mynatt Park in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, may be overlooked because it sits in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains. This is one of those hidden gem parks that is hiding in plain sight and you may have even passed it by yourself. But next time you head into the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail make a quick stop to enjoy lunch at Mynatt Park... you'll be glad you did!
