We love all the adorable small towns in South Dakota. Some are even better than others, because they offer so much to see and do. Take a day trip to this little town soon!
Tucked away in the southeastern corner of the state, you'll find the vibrant little town of Vermillion.
Vermillion isn't one of South Dakota's tiniest towns - it boasts a population of around 10,000 people. It's a very community-oriented place, though, and only ranks as South Dakota's 11th largest.
It's home to the University of South Dakota, which accounts for some of the population. Students here lend a unique energy to this quaint town.
The University has a rich history here. Built in 1862, the campus has a wonderful blend of old and new buildings. The 274-acre campus is a beautiful place to go for a stroll, and of course the University offers plenty of entertainment for locals, from athletics to the arts.
Visit the National Music Museum, located on campus at 414 E. Clark Street. Visit Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; Sunday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
You'll find an extensive collection of musical instruments - from rudimentary drums, to a collection of cool guitars.
The W.H. Over Museum, located at 1110 Ratingen Strasse, has a wonderful collection of historic items - from archaeological finds to displays (like this 1882 Mydland Claim Shanty). The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Stop by the cozy Cafe Brule for some coffee or a tasty meal.
You'll find it on 24 W. Main Street, and it's open seven days a week, from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm.
Prentis Park is a pretty, 19-acre that's been part of this town since 1923. It recently got a new swimming pool, and is a great place for recreation and relaxation.
For another fun outdoor activity, visit nearby Spirit Mound Historic Prairie. It's just 6.5 miles north of Vermillion.
You might be surprised to find one of the best Asian restaurants in the state right here in Vermilion.
Enjoy a delicious dinner with some delicious Bibimbap at Silk Road. You'll find it at 12 W. Main Street, and it's open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm.
End your day at Valiant Vineyard Winery, which is the oldest winery in the state. Take a tour, enjoy a tasting...
...then snuggle up in a cozy room at the vineyard's Bed & Breakfast.
