One of the best things about our state is how many great small towns in South Dakota there are. We're home to some of the country's most incredible landmarks and charming small towns... but did you know that the Mount Rushmore State was also home to one of our generation's most outstanding journalists? Tom Brokaw's hometown is right here in South Dakota! Come along with us as we show you why Webster, South Dakota is worthy of a stop if you're ever in the area, and not just because it's the birthplace of one of the most famous people from South Dakota.
Welcome to Webster, South Dakota. This town of nearly 2,000 people is most famous for being the hometown of Tom Brokaw and his family.
You'll find Webster tucked away in the northeast part of the state, and like most small towns in South Dakota, it's very quiet and peaceful.
Growing up, Brokaw's father worked as a construction foreman for the Army Corps of Engineers before he moved on to the Black Hills Ordnance Depot.
It was a job that moved the family around the state all through Tom's childhood and adolescence.
By the time Tom started high school, the family had settled in Yankton.
Yankton is where Brokaw attended high school and, later, the University of South Dakota.
Incorporated in 1895, Webster is billed as being a "Destination for the Great Outdoors."
This beautiful town is surrounded by wide open spaces and some of the best hunting and fishing areas in South Dakota.
In addition to its impressive outdoor recreation...
... Webster is also home to ample museums, unique shopping areas, restaurants, and special events.
While he may have grown up in Webster, Brokaw's South Dakota roots run even deeper.
His great-grandfather, Richard P. Brokaw, actually founded the town of Bristol.
Webster truly is a sweet little slice of South Dakota!
