Anyone who has anything mean to say about this charming community of 66 is a true athol! Originally called Myrtle City, Athol is a historic Chicago and North Western Railroad town that is the epitome of tiny town, America!
Get your mind out of the gutter people... this isn't Colorado! Blunt is a small suburb of Pierre that was named for Chicago and North Western Railway official John E. Blunt and is still home to a friendly 350.
No need to explain why the name of this unincorporated Turner County town is funny... (In case you were wondering, the town is named for its founder, the late and great pioneer settler John Hooker.)
Don't let the tough sounding name fool you; Bonesteel is actually a very welcoming place! Established in 1902, Bonesteel was named for H. E. Bonesteel, who was an old a freight forwarder in south-central SoDak.
What sounds like some kind of a small home improvement company is actually a Rapid City-area community that may only house 700, but still boasts its own volunteer fire department, deli, and casino!
It's a happy place, okay?! Located in Yankton County, Gayville was originally settled by Scandinavian farmers and is known as the "Hay Capital of the World!" Need another reason to visit? Gayville also has a number of restaurants, stores, and more.
One of my biggest pet peevers is people who have never heard of Peever, South Dakota! Named for one of its original settlers (F. H. Peever), Peever is currently home to an estimated 166 residents.
Winters in South Dakota can be extremely cold and miserable, but you must admit that they are also gorgeous, with pristinely white snow and glittery ice. However, there is one SoDak town, the best winter town in South Dakota in particular, that will make you feel like you're walking through a snow globe, which just so happens also to be the snowiest town in South Dakota:

Welcome to the super historical and equally snowy town of Lead! As soon as you drive into town limits, it feels like you're crossing into a winter wonderland. Boasting an average snowfall of nearly 200 inches, Lead can almost always be seen with a generous dusting of snow, especially in those mid-fall through late-spring months. And nothing makes it feel like winter (in a magical way) than a healthy dusting of snow.
To put into perspective how much snow that is, the town with the second most snowfall (North Spearfish) receives an average of 134 inches per year, followed by 133.9 inches (Deadwood). So Lead is far and away the best place to experience the colder months!
As you can imagine, Lead is positively beautiful when covered in snow, especially along charming Main Street. You might think you've been transported to a faraway alpine ski resort, but it's right here during Christmas in South Dakota. If you are a fan of outdoor sports in the winter, there is truly no better place to be than Lead, as there are ample opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding. Even a family with wildly diverse interests can find something to delight and excite everyone. Need we mention that Lead even offers 350 miles of designated snowmobile trails?

There's so much to explore you might need multiple trips to this charming town to see it all. Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
