Sometimes its nice to just get in the car and go for a drive without any sort of destination in mind. This scenic byway is the ultimate drive for just that purpose. You can get on the road and just go, enjoy the sights, and take your mind off things. It doesn't matter where you end up, it's the journey that counts, and the one outlined below might just be one of the best scenic drives in South Dakota.
The drive will take you through some of the most picturesque parts of the Black Hills, including the Needles Highway and the Iron Mountain Road, laid out by former South Dakota Senator Peter Norbeck himself, hence the name.
The drive includes some of the most breathtaking views of South Dakota's natural wonders. And, of course, includes Mt. Rushmore in view right from the road.
The unique features of the drive include bridges of many shapes and forms. Curves and bends in the roads, and narrow tunnels cut straight through the rocks.
Don't be surprised if you encounter wildlife on the road like bison. Other animals known to roam there include deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, and plenty of birds and rodents.
The drive is about 70 miles long and was named one of the top ten scenic byways in all of America. You can relax behind the wheel the whole way or stop at some of the many overlooks along the route to take pictures of the stunning landscapes along the way. Here is some more info.
