Hill City was founded in 1876 by miners hoping to strike it rich. With a population of fewer than 1,000 residents, it's the oldest town in the Black Hills, and it's full of history. Some people say that some of the more tragic figures never left...and they remain in Hill City, haunting it.
Main Street
You'll notice that many of the following spots are located on Main Street. That's probably no surprise to those who know the history of this town. Back in the mining days, Hill City was like many other mining towns - a rough place, with plenty of saloons, gambling halls and houses of ill repute. Violence was not uncommon. Reports of dark figures lurking in shadows along Main Street pop up occasionally, and many of these buildings have their own tales of paranormal activity.
Hill City Harley-Davidson
Hill City Harley Davidson is a great place to gaze longingly at a bike, but employees say that there's more than just shiny machines here. The building at 261 Main Street once served as a funeral parlor and crematorium. After closing time, employees have heard strange noises and footsteps. One woman heard the balls on the pool table behind her break. She turned around, and the balls were still moving across the table...but no one else was there.
Alpine Inn
Alpine Inn is a beautiful, historic hotel and restaurant. The delicious German food alone is reason to visit. However, some people claim that the second floor is haunted. Guests say they've heard voices and footsteps late at night, when everyone else is asleep. Alpine Inn is located at 133 Main Street.
Hill City High School
Even this fairly new building at 341 Main Street in Hill City is said to be haunted. Students report ghostly apparitions in the library, and some say that a teenaged girl committed suicide here and still roams the halls at night.
Hill City Cemetery
Hill City Cemetery is a pretty place, and it certainly looks like a nice spot to be laid to rest. But not everyone who is buried here has moved on to a better place, apparently. Visitors here talk of an old man wandering amongst the headstones looking sad, then disappearing when people try to approach. Others claim to see a woman kneeling over a grave, wailing and sobbing, but she also disappears. Orbs, shadows and strange noises have also been experienced here.
1880 Train
The historic 1880 Train is a favorite with locals and tourists, but it's rumored that some of the train cars that sit in the yard here are haunted. Employees say they often see a man in a brown suit who stands around looking nervous, then disappears into thin air. Others claim they've heard screams coming from down the tracks late at night.
