South Dakota is chock-full of unique towns and landmarks to explore. At an elevation of 5,315 feet, Custer, South Dakota is the highest city in the state and the 12th highest in the nation. If you haven't visited recently, you'll want to plan a visit to Custer soon; it has a lot more than just elevation going for it!
The town of Custer was founded in 1875 after gold was found by the 7th Cavalry and Colonel George Armstrong Custer. Today, this beautiful town is a popular place to visit. It's surrounded by some of South Dakota's most spectacular scenery.
Visit the Custer County 1881 Courthouse for some Black Hills History. You'll find it at 411 Mount Rushmore Road. The museum closes during winter months and opens again in May.

South Dakota's most well-loved state park, Custer State Park is full of things to see and do. Wildlife Loop Road (shown here), Sylvan Lake, Legion Lake, and the Cathedral Spires are just a few of the best attractions.
Jewel Cave National Monument is another attraction you can't miss. Allow yourself plenty of time to enjoy a ranger-led tour.
Black Elk Peak, South Dakota's highest point at 7,244 feet, is just 14 miles from Custer. Hike to the top for an incredible view.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is just 19 miles from Custer. If you've never seen it in person, now's the time to visit!
In downtown Custer, you'll find plenty of restaurants to tickle your tastebuds. Don't miss the famous burgers at Black Hills Burger & Bun Co. They're juicy and delicious!
Grab a drink at the Custer Wolf, which offers a nice selection of beer and wine.
Stay overnight at the State Game Lodge at Custer State Park. This stately lodge served as the "Summer White House" for President Calvin Coolidge, and offers cozy rooms chock-full of history.
