South Carolina is a vacationer's paradise. We really do have it all with gorgeous mountain ranges and stunning coastlines that people (including natives) flock to in droves. But sometimes it seems the big budget cities get all the love, when there are so many smaller cities and towns in the Palmetto State that are perfect spots to visit or take a vacation.

The most overlooked city in South Carolina is nestled between two of the state's most popular vacation destinations. And while both Charleston and Myrtle Beach offer fantastic options for travelers, any trip to to the Lowcountry of South Carolina that doesn't include a stop in this charming city seems almost criminal. It has so much to offer in the way of things to do and places to stay and eat, plus it has a history almost as long as Charleston. Take a look:

Georgetown is South Carolina's third oldest city.

Established in 1729, this historic city is as charming as Charleston and Beaufort, the two settlements established before this one.

Georgetown is both picturesque and charming.

The historic downtown is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The streets are dotted with historic buildings, mature trees and an attractive updated inviting streetscape.

Historic Front Street is lined with shops and restaurants and other interesting things.

Are you into antiques? Georgetown is the perfect spot for antiquing! More in to boats? Then visit the Maritime Museum (shown above) to get a feel for the history of boating/fishing in this old city. Georgetown is one of the oldest fishing villages that remain relatively untouched in the Palmetto State. More on that here.

It's located on a bluff overlooking the Sampit River, yet right in town.

There are so many fabulous restaurants in Georgetown you may have trouble deciding which one! From fine dining to casual riverside eateries, Georgetown has the spot you're looking for.

There's much to see and do in Georgetown and its small size means most things are within walking distance.

The Harborwalk offers a riverside center of commerce featuring restaurants, shops and boat tours. Conveniently, it's located right behind the main street in town (Front Street).

Take a boat tour out to see the lighthouses of Georgetown.

This one, called the Georgetown Light, is at the entrance to Winyah Bay and can only be seen by boat.

Love exploring old plantations of the South?

Hopsesee Plantation in Georgetown was built in 1735 and was the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. It's open for tours from the celler to the attic. More info on that here.
