Sometimes you just need to get out of the city, even if you find yourself in a fascinating urban oasis like Charleston. Did you know that South Carolina is home to 34 islands? Here we dive into the details of one particular island known as Bear Island – a bird lover's paradise, with 12,000 serene acres to explore. This South Carolina remote water destination awaits. You may even see an eagle or an alligator, or both, as you gaze out across the water. Bear Island is a must-visit this summer.
Bear Island, South Carolina is located between Edisto Island and Beaufort, in Green Pond.
North Carolina also boasts of a Bear Island, but this one belongs to South Carolina.
From Highway 17, turn on to Bennett’s Point Road and go 13 miles. The entrance to Bear Island is one mile ahead after crossing the Ashepoo River.
Bear Island is open to the public from February through October each year.
In the off season, when the island is closed to the public, scheduled hunting takes place.
Hiking, biking, birding, and fishing are popular pastimes here on Bear Island.
Maybe you will be lucky enough to notice a group of flamingos, or an assortment of feathered friends.
Bear Island provides a safe haven for wintering waterfowl, and threatened and endangered bird species.
For the best chance to see flora and fauna, park along TiTi Road and then walk the many side roads.
Willets, bald eagles, herons, egrets, osprey, and more can be spotted here on the island.
