Let's face it, it can get super hot and humid this time of year in the Palmetto State. But if there's one thing that's sure to rescue you on a hot summer day, it's a cold slice of watermelon. If you agree, then you'll love this tiny little town in South Carolina that transforms into a watermelon wonderland each year. Hampton County has hosted an annual watermelon festival for 75 big years.
The festival has gotten so big that it's spread to a few locations in the county, including the tiny towns of Hampton and Varnville.
It's such a fun event, the whole county gets behind it. The businesses even decorate their buildings in honor of the ripe sweet melons.
And babies and toddlers don their best watermelon attire.
Even if they sleep through many of the activities.
And especially for a trip through town in a souped-up watermelon wagon.
Even the adults have special watermelon-themed clothes for the occasion.
The communities get together and build several watermelon floats for the annual parade.
It seems people maybe pick their favorite part of the watermelon and wear that color.
It would seem these float participants prefer the rind, while the previous photo's float riders like the sweet pink melon!
The parade goes nearly four miles from Varnville to Hampton and you'll see some familiar sights, including cool farm tractors.
There's a separate (much shorter) youth parade - and it's everything that's right in this world.
The kids decorate their wheels and get to be center stage, er, road for the occasion.
Just like the adult parade on Saturday, there's really no tellin' what you'll see at the youth parade. But you can bet it'll make you smile.
No Watermelon Festival would be complete without a watermelon eating contest.
Or, just watermelon eating, period.
In the end, the watermelons stack up against one another for the best of the best. Ribbons are won and recognition is given for the best melon of the festival. And someone goes home with bragging rights for a whole year.
Hampton County South Carolina is hosting their 75th Watermelon Festival from June 17 - 25, 2017.
It's hard to believe all this hullabaloo - and much more we didn't even get to mention - happens every year when a couple of tiny little towns in South Carolina transform into a watermelon wonderland. But it does!
Hampton County Watermelon Festival takes place the second weekend in June. For more information see these links: Official Website | Facebook Page.
