If not for a fateful decision in the mid-1930s, this charming little village along South Carolina's Coastal Highway 17 might not exist.
Few people know the original U.S. Highway 17 that runs along South Carolina's coast actually passed through Florence and Marion, South Carolina - according to the Wikipedia listing. The highway was developed in the middle 1920s, but in 1935 the decision was made to re-route Highway 17 to run through Myrtle Beach and Georgetown. The extra traffic may have been the boost this small village needed.
Only three years later, The original Hammock Shop opened in 1938 in Pawleys Island.
Today, you can visit the site of that original Pawleys Island Hammock Shop and even watch the weaver work his magic. Or, just take a little pretend snooze in one of the many comfy rope hammocks set up out front.
Over the years, this charming little shopping village has grown from a little hammock shop to much, much more.
The village's old-timey charm is one of the natural pulls of Pawleys Island. People love strolling around the shady property, popping in and out of one-of-a-kind stores and browsing at their leisure.
As you can imagine, there are several seasonal village events. And even an occasional troubadour. (Yes, that was probably a subtle reference and/or comparison to "The Gilmore Girls.")
The Hammock Shops Village is comprised of several stand-alone old cottages housing unique stores.
The proximity to the ocean just across the waterway on Pawley's Island proper, means you're sure to find some beachy things here as well - including shells and...
...clothing and accessories.
No shopping experience would be complete without shoes, right?
Plan to have lunch here. There are a few options to choose from where you can get everything from seafood to hotdogs.
Or, you could just indulge in homemade candy and fudge!
When it's time to rest your feet, there are plenty of options.
And even a playgound for the kiddos.

The Hammock Shops Village is located at 10880 Ocean Hwy, Pawleys Island, SC 29585. If you've ever traveled between Georgetown and Myrtle Beach on Highway 17, then chances are VERY GOOD that you've already driven by this landmark. Now you know it's worth a stop.
