In the Palmetto State we pride ourselves on being different. This story definitely fits the bill. Some people may not know there's a town in South Carolina with giant turkeys all over downtown.
The giant faux fowl were installed a while back in the small historic town of Edgefield.
Why, you ask? They were installed by the National Wildlife Turkey Federation, whose national headquarters are located right here in South Carolina -- in this small town.
These artsy birds grace the streets and storefronts of the Town of Edgefield.
The Ambassadors of Hospitality are happily dressed to charm, decorated and painted in colorful themes.
The "Ten Governors Turkey" commemorates one of Edgefield's many claims to fame: being home to 10 governors.
But so far, no turkey has been placed for Strom Thurmond, who was born and died here in this small South Carolina town. However, there is a statue of him in the town square.
A few years ago, there were whispers of an arrest surrounding an April Fool's stunt when some trickster decided to unbolt and move some of the turkeys to the town square.
But it's all in fun - and pride. The National Wildlife Turkey Federation even operates a Turkey Shoppe on Main Street. And yes...there's a turkey in front of that too!
And what do the real turkeys think about all of it?
Have you ever heard of or seen the turkeys in Edgefield? We LOVE them!
